How to Use Müllwood Curl Products

Getting the most from your Müllwood products starts with understanding your curl type and following the right technique for Sri Lanka’s tropical climate. Whether you’re new to curl care or a seasoned curly girl, these step-by-step guides will help you get defined, frizz-free curls every wash day.

Not sure where you sit on the curl spectrum? Our guide to curl types 2A to 4C will help you identify your pattern and pick the right products before you start.

Before You Start: Wash Day Prep

Great curls are built on good prep. A few things to get right before any product touches your hair:

  • Detangle while wet and conditioned — work through knots with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb while conditioner is still in, never on dry hair.
  • Don’t towel dry — rough terry towels rough up the hair cuticle and cause frizz. Leave hair dripping wet, or squeeze gently with a cotton T-shirt or microfibre towel.
  • Work in sections — dividing hair into four or more sections means every curl actually gets product, rather than just the top layer.
  • Have everything within reach — in Sri Lanka’s heat, hair starts drying fast. Products should be open and ready before you begin.

How to Use the Lasting Curl Gel

The Müllwood Lasting Curl Gel is your go-to for definition and hold that lasts through Sri Lanka’s humidity. Made with flaxseed extract, it creates a flexible hold that defines without crunch. Curious how the hero ingredient works? Read about the benefits of flaxseed gel for curly hair.

  1. Start with soaking wet hair — do not squeeze out water before applying. The gel works best on dripping wet hair.
  2. Take a palm-sized amount and distribute evenly through a section of hair, working from roots to ends.
  3. Scrunch upward — cup your hands under your hair and scrunch toward your scalp to encourage curl formation.
  4. Repeat section by section until all hair is coated.
  5. Air dry or diffuse on low heat. Do not touch until completely dry.
  6. Scrunch out the crunch — once fully dry, gently scrunch your curls to break the gel cast and reveal soft, defined curls.

Best for: Type 2C to 4A curls needing definition and frizz control in humid conditions.

Pro tip: if your curls feel stiff after drying, you haven’t used too much gel — you simply haven’t scrunched out the cast yet. That crunchy shell is doing its job protecting the curl while it dries. Break it with your hands and the softness appears underneath.

How to Use the Lasting Defining Cream

The Müllwood Lasting Defining Cream nourishes and defines simultaneously — perfect as a standalone styler for looser curl types or as a base layer under the gel for tighter curls.

  1. Apply to wet hair immediately after washing while hair is still dripping.
  2. Take a 50 cent coin-sized amount per section — less is more, especially in Sri Lanka’s humidity.
  3. Smooth and scrunch — run the cream through each section from mid-length to ends, then scrunch upward.
  4. Layer with Curl Gel on top for extra definition and longer-lasting hold.
  5. Air dry for best results — the cream works with Sri Lanka’s natural humidity to keep curls moisturised.

Best for: Type 2A to 3C waves and curls needing moisture, softness and natural definition.

Pro tip: tighter, coilier hair (4A–4C) can use the cream far more generously than the guidance above — coily textures are the most moisture-hungry, so apply liberally as a hydrating base before the gel.

How to Use the Hydrating Hair Mist

The Müllwood Hydrating Hair Mist is your refresh-day hero — the product that keeps your curls looking great between wash days without restarting your whole routine.

  1. On dry or slightly damp hair — spray evenly across your curls from about 20cm away.
  2. Scrunch gently — cup sections of hair and scrunch upward to reactivate curl memory.
  3. No need to re-apply styling products — the mist alone is enough to refresh 2nd and 3rd day curls.
  4. Use in air-conditioned environments — a quick spritz revives curls that have dried out from air conditioning.
  5. Great as a pre-styling spray — mist onto damp hair before applying cream and gel on wash days for extra moisture.

Best for: All curl types on non-wash days, and anyone whose curls dry out quickly in air-conditioned spaces.

Drying Your Curls the Right Way

How you dry matters as much as what you apply. The golden rule is simple: do not touch your hair while it dries. Every touch disturbs the forming curl clump and introduces frizz.

  • Air drying is the gentlest option and works beautifully in Sri Lanka’s warmth. Let hair dry undisturbed until there is no dampness left at all.
  • Diffusing speeds things up. Use low heat and low speed, cup sections into the diffuser bowl, hold still for 20–30 seconds, then move on.
  • Wait for bone dry before scrunching out the cast. Scrunching damp hair is the single most common cause of frizz.
  • Avoid the ceiling fan directly overhead while drying — moving air from above blows curl clumps apart.

The Full Müllwood Curl Routine

For the best results, use all three products together in the correct order:

  1. 🚿 Wash day: Apply Defining Cream to soaking wet hair section by section, then scrunch Curl Gel on top for hold and definition
  2. 💨 Dry: Air dry or diffuse on low heat — do not touch until completely dry
  3. Finish: Scrunch out the crunch once fully dry for soft, bouncy curls
  4. 🌿 Refresh days: Spritz Hydrating Mist on dry or slightly damp hair to revive curl pattern

Want all three products in one bundle? The Müllwood Trifecta bundle includes the Curl Gel, Defining Cream and Hydrating Mist at a bundled price — everything you need for a complete curl routine.

Refresh Days: Keeping Curls Alive Between Washes

You do not need to wash and restyle every day — in fact, most curly hair prefers fewer washes. To stretch your wash day results:

  1. Protect curls overnight — sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase, or gather hair loosely on top of your head in a “pineapple”.
  2. Assess in the morning — if curls are simply flattened, a light mist and scrunch is usually all they need.
  3. Spritz and scrunch — apply the Hydrating Hair Mist section by section and cup-scrunch upward to wake the curl pattern.
  4. Spot-treat only — if just the crown has gone flat, refresh that area rather than soaking the whole head.

Tips for Sri Lankan Curl Types

Sri Lanka’s tropical climate means your curls behave differently to what most international guides describe. Here are our top tips for Sri Lankan curlies:

  • Work fast after washing — apply products while hair is still dripping wet before the heat starts drying it
  • Less product than you think — Sri Lanka’s humidity does a lot of the moisturising work; too much product weighs curls down
  • Embrace air drying — Sri Lanka’s heat means faster drying times without needing a diffuser
  • Night care matters — protect curls on a satin pillowcase or pineapple overnight to maintain curl pattern
  • Adjust by season — you may need slightly more product during the dry season and less during the monsoon when humidity is highest

Troubleshooting Common Curl Problems

If your results are not what you hoped, it is almost always one of these five things:

  • Curls are frizzy and undefined. Your hair was probably not wet enough when you applied product, or you touched it while drying. Apply to soaking wet hair and leave it alone until bone dry.
  • Curls feel stiff and crunchy. Perfectly normal — that is the gel cast. Wait until hair is completely dry, then scrunch it out with your hands.
  • Curls are limp and weighed down. You may be using too much product, or too much cream for your curl type. Loose waves in particular need a very light hand.
  • Curls fall flat by midday. Try more gel and less cream, and make sure hair is fully dry before you touch it. Humidity punishes half-dry curls.
  • Hair feels coated or dull over time. Every Müllwood product is silicone-free and water-soluble, so build-up is unlikely — but any product overapplied can accumulate. Read more on silicone-free vs paraben-free formulas.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much product should I use?

Start with less than you think you need — roughly a coin-sized amount of cream per section and a palm-sized amount of gel overall — then add more if curls feel dry or undefined. It is easy to add product and hard to take it away.

Can I use the gel without the cream?

Yes. The Lasting Curl Gel works perfectly well on its own, especially for wavy hair or in very humid weather. The cream simply adds moisture and softness underneath, which tighter curl types tend to appreciate.

Why do I have to wait until my hair is completely dry?

Because the gel forms a light cast around the curl as it dries, holding the shape in place. Touching or scrunching before that cast has fully set breaks the curl clump apart, which is what creates frizz.

How often should I wash my curls?

Most curly and coily hair does best with fewer washes — anywhere from once to three times a week, depending on your scalp, activity level and how much product you use. On non-wash days, refresh with the Hydrating Hair Mist instead.
